What motivates students to put in the extra effort in a large introductory module? In the bachelor's module "Basics of Accounting," one initiative has proven particularly effective: the highest-performing students are invited to visit the Volksparkstadion. This year, the visit took place twice. The first visit in January included a presentation on the financial planning of Hamburger Sport-Verein. The match scheduled to follow was postponed due to weather, prompting a second visit at a later date — this time including the match itself.
The initiative illustrates how extracurricular incentives can foster engagement in large foundational modules. Linking academic performance to a meaningful and practice-oriented experience creates tangible added value that extends beyond the course material.
