Background
Voluntary blood donations are still the only way to meet the growing demand for blood products. So far, however, little is known about the extent to which marketing measures can positively influence blood donation acquisition and retention. Against this background, the research cooperation Health Marketing between the DRK Blood Donation Service North-East and the professorships of Prof. Dr. Silke Boenigk and Prof. Dr. Michel Clement from the University of Hamburg was initiated in September 2010. One aim of the cooperation is the promotion of young scientists in the field of health marketing. In addition, new strategies and measures for the DRK Blood Donation Service North-East will be derived on the basis of scientific findings from donation research.
Research partner of the cooperation is the DRK-Blutspendedienst Nord-Ost GmbH
As an institution of the German Red Cross, seven regional blood donation services are active in Germany. The cooperation's research partner, the Blood Donation Service North-East, daily collects blood donations in the federal states of Berlin, Saxony, Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein and organizes the processing and testing of the blood. In this way, they ensure the supply of blood preparations to patients in the region and provide transfusion medical care for the clinics and doctors' practices. The tasks of the blood donation teams include taking care of the donors' well-being as well as protecting the recipients of blood preparations from infections and other disadvantages that may be associated with the transfusion of blood. The research partner is also actively involved in the further development of blood donation marketing in Germany and Europe.
This research cooperation is intended to provide long-term scientific support for Germany's largest joint task: voluntary unpaid blood donation to the German Red Cross.
