In this year’s round of the project format “Digital Innovation Lab” the team around Alexander Malyshev and Phillip Rath developed a fully-automated smart ventilation system for old residential buildings. The hybrid solution aims at making these buildings more energy efficient, reducing energy expenses and increasing indoor air quality for its inhabitants. It consists of a 3D-printed hardware module that is attached to window sash and frame, embedded sensor technology that measures room parameters (like room temperature and CO₂) and is connected to a mobile app. The solution opens the window autonomously if certain threshold values are exceeded and closes it accordingly.
The student team will use the funding for further developing the current solution and for quantifying its efficiency with a scientific research approach. An experiment will be conducted to compare the current fully automated smart window module and a less complex “push” recommendation system for digital nudging that requires manual window operation. The team will also expand the complexity of the existing open-access solution by incorporating additional parameters in the ventilation decision (e.g., external weather data, pollution etc.). The project team will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Jan Recker and his team.
