The 2nd This IS Excellent Research Network, held on November 21–22 at the University of Cologne, brought together researchers from across Germany to discuss emerging topics in generative AI and data-driven research practices in information systems. Over two days, both early-career and established scientists exchanged experiences on engaging with generative AI in the workflow and how various AI tools are reshaping the academic world, from the design of technical research to evolving perceptions of psychological responsibility. Representing the Chair of Information Systems and Digital Innovation (ISDI) at the University of Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Jan Recker, Dr. Lucas Göbeler, Stephanie Kitzler, and Gangli Tan contributed their perspectives on effectively leveraging generative AI to support quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as academic writing. A particular highlight was the keynote by Prof. Dr. Armin Heinzl (University of Mannheim), who used a reflective, narrative style to emphasize the importance of building institutions in information system research and the role of technology in fostering society responsibility.
We are grateful for the excellent organization by Prof. Dr. Stefan Seidel and the WISO faculty of the University of Cologne. We look forward to our next meeting at Humboldt University of Berlin with Prof. Dr. Jan Mendling’s team.
