In June 2024, Prof. Voß (IWI) welcomed Prof. Monica Gentili from the J.B Speed School of Engineering, University of Louisville, Kentucky to discuss a cooperation for an international student research project. The 3-year project plan „IRES: Digital Twin Technologies in Logistics and Supply Chain Management“was submitted shortly afterwards and has now been awarded a U.S. National Science Foundation grant.
The project plan includes three annual research experiences at the Institute of Information Systems for about eight undergraduate and graduate students from different U.S. universities. During the 6-week research experiences, students will gain a deep understanding of digital twin technologies and their applications in port and maritime traffic logistics, developing practical skills in utilizing advanced simulation tools, integrating real-time data, and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to ameliorate logistics operations.
Practically, the students will be engaged in international research activities, cross-team meetings and also courses held by the lecturers Dr. Kai Brüssau, Dr. Robert Stahlbock and Prof. Stefan Voß at the IWI.
Furthermore, the IRES collaboration will enhance and strengthen academic and research bonds between the Institute of Information Systems (UHH) and the J.B Speed School of Engineering (UofL) and introduce fresh practical insights to both parties. The mutual exchange of knowledge will facilitate the development of joint publications and future research proposals.
