Research Interests
One focus of my research interests is the field of information systems, data analysis and application of bioanalogical algorithms (artificial neural nets, evolutionary algorithms) as well as support vector machines for solving economic forecasting problems and classification tasks to support managerial decision making. The objective beside of the problem modelling is the examination and the improvement of the efficiency and performance of existing algorithms. Within my PhD thesis a combination of evolutionary algorithms for data selection and construction of neural nets was developed and successfully applied to a real-world problem. Applications of artificial neural nets (like Multilayer Perceptron, Learning Vector Quantization, Probabilistic Neural Net) and their evolutionary design, if possible implemented as parallel algorithm on a PC network, have been examined in cooperation with companies. Results of good quality have been demonstrated.
Another field of research is the examination and application of methods of operations research for solving logistic problems at maritime container terminals with focus on crane scheduling in an automated yard.
You can find more information on forecasting and data mining with neural networks and support vector machines at BISlab.com which is the main homepage of the institutes competence centre for business intelligence.

Evaluation
E-Business – Winter Semester 2025/26
- Positive feedback
- Enthusiasm and interesting content#
- Familiar examples that made understanding easier
- I particularly liked the discussions, or rather the opportunity to participate in discussions, and the many questions you raised.
- Unfortunately, other courses rarely achieve this.
- The enthusiasm that was conveyed, and the use of humor. In general, also thought-provoking perspectives that I have taken with me for life.
- Very enthusiastic lecturer; discussions in class and case studies were very interesting and instructive; practical examples were excellent
- Suggestions (gladly taken into account for future courses)
- More practice-oriented topics and information. In some cases, too many graphics and models that are not very connected to reality.
- More case studies would be appreciated, as the exchange is particularly helpful and interesting.
- The practical examples were good, but they were mostly at the beginning and became less frequent toward the end.
Exercises: Fundamentals of Information Systems – Winter Semester 2025/26 (two courses)
“What did you particularly like and what should be retained? Were your expectations regarding content, didactic design, or acquired skills and knowledge met?”
- That everything was logically explained and easy to follow.
- That at suitable points we occasionally went beyond the exercise content through additional, understanding-oriented questions from you. The cross-references to lecture slides were very helpful.
- The explanation and communication of the content.
- Explanations of the tasks and real-life references.
- Clear explanations and responsiveness to students.
- I particularly liked that you were never judged for saying something wrong. Even if you had little knowledge of information systems, you still felt comfortable participating, which I found really good. The content was explained very clearly. Dr. Stahlbock was one of the lecturers whose sessions I always attended.
- Professional and friendly demeanor, with both seriousness and respect. By far the best professor in the Information Systems module. I should have switched to your exercise group earlier.
- Very good and clear explanations; when there are comprehension problems, things are kindly repeated, and the general interaction is very pleasant.
- Extensive responses to all questions; very good and understandable explanations.
- The exercise sessions are very important. More of them, please—but aligned closely with the exam.
- More exercises with you.
- Everything was explained very clearly. You repeatedly checked for questions and addressed them.
- I particularly liked the calm and relaxed atmosphere. My expectations were fully met. Thank you.
- Dr. Stahlbock’s way of explaining: first clarifying the individual terms of the task. His motivation to encourage us to think independently.
- The tips and tricks for the upcoming exam. You can tell that Dr. Stahlbock wants all of us to pass. Very good—keep it up.
- Explanations with practical, real-life examples to illustrate theoretical processes were always very helpful for understanding.
The atmosphere was pleasant, and there was space for explanations. - Good student involvement and clear explanations, also when answering questions. It encouraged independent thinking beyond the task.
- Good explanations and additional background knowledge. Examples. Everything was explained calmly and clearly.
- I find your explanations very good, and compared to other exercise sessions, I can follow and understand what you want to convey. Another plus is that you keep an eye on time and, unlike in another session I attended, manage to cover all the material. Also, that you write things down (e.g., models). Thank you—your sessions helped me a lot.
- The detailed, example-based explanations helped me understand things that were not previously clear to me. The didactic design fully met my expectations.
- Going through the tasks step by step and gradually reaching the solution was very helpful for understanding.
- Absolutely nothing should be changed.
- Please continue exactly like this—I have never had such a good exercise session as the ones you lead.
- There were no suggestions for improvement or negative criticism (except that I occasionally ran a few minutes over time—to finish an explanation or answer a question).
Thank you for the evaluations.
