Business Process Management
Business Process Management is an interactive, learning factory-oriented course in which students learn the basics of business process modeling, process mining, process analytics, and robotic process automation. The course is supported by educational videos and accompanying digital resources that are available on demand. The course follows the didactic concept "digital first."
Thematic focus
This module introduces the basic concepts and applications for managing as well as implementing and executing business processes and teaches them exemplarily using relevant techniques, methods, and tools. The starting point is abstract concepts of process maturity models, process life cycle models, process patterns and the integration, management and automation of business processes within and between companies.
Based on a value-oriented analysis and planning, a mapping in a consistent process design, a (partially) automated process implementation, and a feedback to the process controlling take place ideally. The technical basis is provided by Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) platforms for end-to-end process integration, building service-oriented architectures, and coordinating and orchestrating web services and workflows. With the consolidation and standardization of basic processes, consistent cooperation of different applications and systems for handling business processes is made possible based on message- and standard-based process integration methods (interoperability).
On the one hand, in-depth topics are presented in various live lectures and learning videos. On the other hand, practice-based learning factories provide the opportunity to deal with a selected sub-topic from this area (as specified by the organizers).
Course structure
The course is composed of the elements of Teaching Sessions and Learning Factories and includes digital sessions as well as decentralized individual group work:
- In every Teaching Session, the contents of the respective chapter(s) will be discussed. In addition, we will have guest lectures (by experts in the field) and tool demos. Of course there is also room for Q&As and small talk.
- Learning groups will offer you the opportunity to work focused and guided by a lecturer on one specific task that will be presented afterwards in the respective Learning Factory.
The access data to the digital course platform and content will be communicated via STiNE.
Learning environment
The course uses the following technological platforms:
- STiNE (university course management and central communication).
- HARCIS website (chair-related course organization and content)
- Zoom (virtual attendance dates and performance records).
Please read the FAQ and the instructions for setting up and using the Uni Hamburg Zoom account before attending the first Zoom session:
- Install and test your Zoom access in advance
- After successful Zoom registration, please join the Zoom channel "MA-BPM WS23" (Viewing and Joining Channels), which is required for the collaboration between all students and the HARCIS team.
- For the Learning Factories, additional closed zoom channels "BPM-Group-<No.>" are provided per team for the communication and submission of the Learning Factories' integrated exercises.
Students who have not registered in these Zoom channels after the end of the official registration phase for the course will be set inactive in Stine and thus lose their right to take examinations!
Passing requirements
Active participation in the Learning Factories is strongly recommended in preparation for the course examination (written exam).
- Participation in session No. 1 "Introduction" is mandatory to understand the mission and the organizational foundations of the course structure including the assignment to the Learning Groups
- Active participation in the learning group in solving and presenting the assigned learning task in the appropriate learning factory is mandatory!
