Business Process Management
Business Process Management is an interactive, learning factory-oriented course in which students learn the basics of business process modeling, process mining, process analytics and robotic process automation. The course is supported by educational videos and accompanying digital resources that are available on demand. The course follows the didactic concept "digital first."
Thematic focus
This module introduces the basic concepts and applications for managing as well as implementing and executing business processes and teaches them exemplarily using relevant techniques, methods, and tools. The starting point is abstract concepts of process maturity models, process life cycle models, process patterns and the integration, management and automation of business processes within and between companies.
Based on a value-oriented analysis and planning, a mapping in a consistent process design, a (partially) automated process implementation, and a feedback to the process controlling take place ideally. The technical basis is provided by Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) platforms for end-to-end process integration, building service-oriented architectures, and coordinating and orchestrating web services and workflows. With the consolidation and standardization of basic processes, consistent cooperation of different applications and systems for handling business processes is made possible based on message- and standard-based process integration methods (interoperability).
On the one hand, in-depth topics are presented in various live lectures and learning videos. On the other hand, practice-based learning factories provide the opportunity to deal with a selected sub-topic from this area (as specified by the organizers).
Course structure
The course is composed of the elements Teaching Session and Learning Factory and includes digital sessions as well as decentralized individual group work:
- Teaching sessions provide a sound introduction to the subject area and advanced application in the context of corresponding business scenarios. In addition, we will have guest lectures (by experts in the field) and tool demos. Of course there is also room for Q&As and small talk.
- Learning factories offer you the opportunity to work on (reverse) case studies in small learning groups in a focused manner and under the guidance of a lecturer. The results are then presented in plenary session as part of the exam.
Note: The access data for the digital course platform and the content will be sent to the students who have registered for the course in advance via STiNE.
Learning environment
On the basis of a “digital first” approach, students should be able to participate flexibly and from any location (UHH Zoom access) in the course dates (including compatibility with work and family, participation of disabled persons, guest students, guest lectures, semesters abroad). The course uses the following technological plattforms:
- STiNE (university course management and central communication).
- HARCIS website (chair-related course organization and content)
- Zoom (virtual attendance dates and exams).
Please read the FAQ and the instructions for setting up and using the Uni Hamburg Zoom account before attending the first Zoom session:
- Install and test your Zoom access in advance
- After successful Zoom registration, please join the Zoom channel "MA-BPM WS24" (Viewing and Joining Channels), which is required for the collaboration between all students and the HARCIS team.
- For the Learning Factories, additional closed Zoom channels "MA-BPM WS24 Group-<No.>" are provided per learning group for the communication and submission of the digital artefacts of the exam.
Note: Students who do not register in these Zoom channels in time and have not assigned themselves to a learning group from the first Learning Factory do not meet the (organizational) requirements to take the exam!
Module Exam
The module exam is integrated into the concept of the small group-based Learning Factory and comprises 3 (partial) exams (max. 100 points):
- Learning Factory: Business Process Tools (pass/fail)
- Learning Factory: Business Process Modeling (max. 50 points)
- Learning Factory: Business Process Mining (max. 50 points)
The first learning factory must be successfully passed, otherwise the module will be assessed as failed in its entirety:
- The digital artefacts of the exams must be deposited in the Zoom team channel before the respective first presentation date.
- The grading of the performance records is based on the assumption that the contributions of the learning group members are equally distributed. If this assumption is to be deviated from, the individual contributions of the group members must be indicated when submitting the transcript of records.
- Proof of incapacity to study/examine (form) must be submitted immediately to the responsible study office (max. 3 working days), a simple certificate of incapacity to work (yellow slip) is formally inadmissible and will not be accepted!
- Please note that even a single unexcused absence (without a doctor's certificate) on one of the compulsory dates will result in the loss of the right to take the examination!
Note: Active participation in the first Teaching Sessions (Introduction) and all 3 Learning Factories (Exam) is mandatory!
