Information Systems
Information Management (Bachelor)
We define information management as purpose oriented provision, processing, and distribution of the resource information for decision support as well as the provision of respective infrastructure. Main aims of this lecture are the ability to handle basic instruments and methods of information management as well as getting to know its basic terms: information, data, knowledge, and communication. Developing definitions and doctrines about information management as well as learning about its objectives and goals is another important goal. In more detail the subtopics information technology management, data management (incl. data warehousing) and information logistics are examined. Knowledge management with the subtopics decision support, learning (incl. data mining), automated solution generation (knowledge-based systems) is another important part of the lecture. Apart from that, we take a closer look at communication and coordination: groupware and workflow management, and external information management. Finally, we give a broadened perspective on the organization of information management.
Production (Bachelor)
The lecture gives an introduction to production planning and supply chain management. It starts with production functions and production types. Then it advances towards supply chain management and logistics. Strategic, tactic and operational production planning mainly focuses on topics such as lot sizing, assembly line balancing and machine scheduling. Apart from that, we deal with decision models within the production context. Standard software, starting from classical mrp towards production planning and control (PPC) and advanced planning systems (APS) is another important part of this lecture.
Information Management in TTraffic and Transportation (Master)
Students are introduced to issues in models and applications of information systems in traffic and transportation. Examples for these are manifold: seaport and container terminal logistics incl. operations management and intermodal traffic, and also the extension to international issues in Supply Chain Management (SCM) and logistics; information systems regarding: maritime shipping, terminal operators, shipping companies etc.; information systems and management in public mass transit. Emphasis is laid on developing abilities in problem solving and managing information systems as well as finding ways of analyzing information systems (e.g., traffic and transportation systems with a focus on seaports and container terminals).
Advances in Information Systems (Master)
The lecture includes various and changing topics from the field of information systems, which are fit to show current issues as well as learn about state-of-the-art methods and tools in information systems. These could be related to certain aspects of a specific topic, (e.g. modelling, decision support, telecommunication systems). Alternatively, contents of current conferences or proceedings related to information systems could be discussed in depth. Students are learning how the process of scientific research works in practice through writing a paper, presenting it and peer-reviewing papers of fellow students.
Advanced Production Planning (Master)
The lecture is based on the bachelor lecture production. The overall topics are specifications in production processes: aggregate production planning, lot sizing (linked lot sizes, discrete lot sizing), scheduling ( a branch-and-bound approach) facility layout, and reliability (disruption/failure management).
