Recognition of Coursework and Examinations

A preliminary assessment before a study‑abroad stay indicates whether credits you plan to earn abroad can be transferred to your program in Hamburg after your return.

A positive preliminary assessment is not a recognition decision. Formal recognition is applied for after the study‑abroad stay via the regular recognition application.

You may submit up to three preliminary assessment applications.

How to apply for recognition or a preliminary assessment:

1. Complete the application in STiNE: 

• Log in to your STiNE account.
• Navigate to “Study management → Applications”.
• Select the application titled V Fak. BWL – Antrag auf Anerkennung/Anrechnung von Leistungen (Application for recognition/credit of coursework).

2. Upload your documents: 

Upload the required documents to STiNE according to your application type (see “Required documents” below).

3. Submit the application: 

Click “Submit” (Absenden) in STiNE.

4. Email the Academic Office (Studienbüro): 

Send an email to studienbuero.bwl"AT"uni-hamburg.de stating your student ID, degree program, and your application number. If you submit multiple applications, please list all application numbers.

Please submit a separate application for each item (module/course) to be recognized.

1. Preliminary assessment (before a study‑abroad stay):

• Proof of workload (total hours)
• Proof of level (Bachelor or Master)
• Module or course description (including reading list, outline, and content description)

2. Recognition of coursework already completed:

• Transcript of Records or official proof of the coursework to be recognized
• Certified translation (German/English), if required
• Grading scale (if the grading system differs)
• Proof of workload (total hours)
• Proof of course level (Bachelor/Master)
• Module/course description including reading list, outline, content description
• Additional documents where applicable (e.g., term paper, notes)
• If the coursework was used, or is still intended to be used, for a different degree: the Examination regulations, including any Program‑specific provisions, study regulations, module descriptions, Module Handbook, and (where applicable) the program guide for that degree program

3. Recognition of extracurricular language courses (e.g., Language Center)

If the grade has already been entered in STiNE, no attachments are required.

• Processing may take up to eight weeks.
• Original documents may be requested for spot checks; please keep them available.
• Your application is decided by the chair of the responsible examinations board. If approved, the recognized credits will be entered automatically into your STiNE account. If denied, you will receive a written notice.
